Horrocks believes in bettering our community and helping those in need. For the Holiday Season, many of our offices helped to make someone’s season a little brighter and more hopeful. Here are just some of the ways our employees made a difference:

Pleasant Grove and Heber, Utah Offices

Horrocks’ Pleasant Grove and Heber offices raised almost $3,000 in December for the Community Action Services and Food Bank. The funds went towards their program that helps homeless families find safe housing.

These offices also donated 500 pounds of food at Thanksgiving time to the Community Action Services and Food Bank, which gives food to people in need.

Roosevelt, Utah

Staff members in the Roosevelt office gathered and donated 107 pounds of food for the Duchesne County Food Pantry just in time for Christmas.

Nampa, Idaho

The Nampa staff teamed with the LDS Middleton 7th Ward Young Men and Women to participate in a scavenger hunt for items to donate to the Mercy House, a women and children’s shelter in Nampa, Idaho. The youth visited various homes willing to donate items such as gloves, scarves, coats, toiletries, common household items, and food. Staff donations were combined with the youth group’s collected items and delivered to the shelter a few days before Christmas.

Two of Horrocks’ traffic engineers were recognized as part of the Team/Group of the Year at the 2011 UDOT Annual Conference on November 16, for their contributions to the Utah County I-15 Corridor Expansion (I-15 CORE). Mike Merkley, P.E., and Kelly Ash, P.E., were honored at the conference for their roles in delivering the I-15 CORE Project goals.

The Utah County I-15 CORE Project included the commitment to support local drivers by minimizing inconveniences, constantly improving services, achieving great performance, and creating synergy within all aspects of the project, according to UDOT.

Merkley and Ash were included in the award for developing innovative solutions to minimize traffic impacts and to unify three separate Utah County traffic signals systems. They implemented signal timing plans for detours, crashes, and civic events, while also eliminating unnecessary lane closures to ensure the public the use of every possible lane.

With the cooperation of Provo and Orem, the Traffic Team managed traffic for two Stadium of Fire events, seven BYU football games, and 17 BYU basketball games, while achieving a 45% reduction in delays during these events compared to previous events, according to UDOT.

Additional members of Horrocks’ Traffic department Troy Noall, Taylor Forbush, and Luke Seegmiller also contributed to the project.

Horrocks Engineers is pleased to announce its first annual Give and Get Food Drive. As a Thanksgiving tradition at Horrocks, the company gives all employees turkeys in honor of the Thanksgiving holiday. This year when employees receive their turkeys, Horrocks is encouraging employees to give back by bringing canned and boxed goods for those less fortunate in our community.

Horrocks’ goal is to donate more than 200 pounds of non-perishable food to the Community Action Service and Food Bank in Provo, Utah. The food drive will last from Wednesday through Friday, November 16 – 18, at the Horrocks offices in Pleasant Grove.

“It feels wonderful to help those in need. We are excited our donations can go to local families and people who need it,” said Sandi Lampshire, Marketing Manager.

The Community Action Service and Food Bank (CASFB) serves residents of Utah, Summit, and Wasatch Counties to provide emergency assistance and long-term support to local families in need.

The donated food will be picked up on Friday, November 18 at roughly 5:00 p.m. by CASFB. To participate, bring food items to the reception desk at 2162 West Grove Parkway, Suite 400, Pleasant Grove, 84062.

Horrocks Engineers sponsored a team of riders who participated in the 2011 Tour de Cure Utah in Brigham City on June 11.

The Tour de Cure is an annual biking event that raises funds to help the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in their mission “to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.” It is open to people of all ages.

The Tour is a ride, not a race, and allows for riders to choose to bike for 25, 60, 80, or 100 miles, with rest stop stations along the way. Each rider solicits donations from those willing to act as a rider sponsor, and donates those to the ADA.

This year, the Utah Tour had approximately 1500 riders who raised $404,676 in total donations.

Team Horrocks had 27 riders who were able to raise almost $7000. That amount put Horrocks in second place in the highest corporate team donations, and sixth place in overall team donations.

Team Horrocks even had a few “Red Riders,” or riders with diabetes, participate in this Tour.

Horrocks is proud to be of service to our community and our employees, and help the American Diabetes Association in their quest to stop diabetes.

We’d like to thank our team captain and organizer Sabra Benford for all the work she put forth in making this a great event for Horrocks.

The Horrocks Ogden office volunteered for Ogden City’s annual Make A Difference Day on May 12.

The office supplied about six flats of flowers to be planted at the Golden Hours Center. The group, which included George Benford, Sabra Benford, Mary Porter, Tyann Hunsaker, and Jason Allen, planted the flowers and helped to clean up the gardens. Also in the group were two Ogden City Council Members and staff from the Golden Hours Center. Together, they trimmed overgrown trees and bushes, raked the gardens, and planted flowers. For the event, the city recruits volunteers from their staff, as well as the Boy Scouts of America, local businesses, and residents to take a day to clean up parts of the city that need some refreshing. The volunteering includes donations of time and resources, such as flowers, paint, and other materials to make fixes around the City.

“It’s a great way to involve the local community in sprucing up parts of town that need some work,” said Sabra.

George actually started this event about three years ago when he worked for Odgen City. Since then, the event has multiplied and other cities have started similar projects. The Ogden staff was very proud to do their part in this event.

Horrocks Engineers Blood Battle 2011 Blood Drive ended on a high note. Because of the enthusiasm of donors across northern Utah County, we were able to surpass our goal of 100 donations by two.

No other small business blood drive in Utah has been able to produce more than 100 donations at one time, according to Anita Kay, American Red Cross Donor Recruitment Representative. Thirty-eight of the volunteers were first-time donors, which is also a commendable number.

“It was a great opportunity for Horrocks to team with the northern Utah County cities for this community event,“ Larry Reasch, Vice President of Horrocks, said. “We are pleased with the success in getting 100 plus donations at this drive.“

The drive, which was held April 12, has allowed the American Red Cross to supply blood to hospitals and clinics across the nation. Enough blood was collected at this event to help up to 300 people who are in need of transfusions for various medical and health reasons.

Though this is a great accomplishment, the need for blood is constant as someone needs a blood transfusion every two seconds and five million patients in the U.S. need blood every year, according to the American Red Cross.

Blood Battle 2011 was a friendly competition that pitted local businesses against northern Utah County cities to see who could bring in the most donations. Horrocks Engineers and Mozy were named champions of the Blood Battle with 54 total donors. The combined cities brought in 48 donors: 16 from Pleasant Grove City, 14 with Eagle Mountain, 11 from Lindon, and six from Cedar Hills.

Pleasant Grove City was named city champion and will be awarded with a catered lunch courtesy of Horrocks Engineers.

We hope to make Blood Battle 2012 even more successful by getting more local cities and businesses to participate and help us exceed our donation number of 102.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this event such a success. We are proud of our community and hope to see you next year at Blood Battle 2012!

The American Red Cross is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people receive the blood they need across the nation. The Red Cross “plays a critical role in our nation’s health care system.
